Steel Band Workshops

"I am pleased to provide a reference for steel band tutor Angela Allen. Ms. Allen first taught a steel band workshop for the University of Sheffield in 2009, when she taught a group of students on the MA in World Music Studies by Distance Learning during one of their short residentials in Sheffield. By the end of the two-hour workshop, they could play several pieces quite fluently and were obviously enjoying it. Ms. Allen proved to be an energetic and accomplished workshop leader, and her enthusiasm was infectious, resulting in a workshop that was both enjoyable and educational.

As director of the MA in World Music Studies, I was keen to repeat this experience at the next opportunity, and arranged for Ms. Allen to teach another workshop in the next cycle of this two-year course, in August 2011. Once again it was an outstanding workshop and students made very positive comments about it in their feedback forms, such as: “The Steel pan workshop was particularly excellent.” I would have no hesitation in inviting Ms. Allen to teach further workshops at the University of Sheffield, and can thoroughly recommend her to anyone looking for a steel band tutor."
