Why Steel Pans?

The steel pan is one of the most motivating and energising instruments to be invented in our lifetime. In fact it is often described as the only new acoustic instrument (not electronic) to have been invented during the 20th century.

In general, people are immediately attracted by the distinctive sound of these unique instruments which makes them an ideal tool for use in a music workshop, where most people will be starting on a equal basis, having never played a steel pan before.

We have developed a large repertoire of arrangements for Steel Pans, the majority of which can be performed as simple melodies and/or a mixture of more complex sequences. This enables us to be responsive to the overall needs of a group whilst exploring and challenging the skills of individual players.

These arrangements are taught without music, encouraging the players to actively listen, play by ear and recognise musical patterns. This aural method is the traditional way to learn to play Steel Pans and enables almost anyone to have a positive experience whilst playing a musical instrument, regardless of their previous knowledge of music.
